Brain dump of everything I learned. Also, AAMA
My perspective: Asian/Middle Eastern-American middle-class guy born and raised in Northern California transferred from a California CC.
Middle School Info (Added to show academic progression)
GPA 1.9; Several friends went to Juvi.
High School Info (Only sent high school transcript) GPA: 3.3 UW; 3.8 W
SAT: 2370; SATII: Biology E (800), Chemistry: (790), Physics: 770
APs: World History (4), AP Physics 1 (3), AP Bio (4),
Ok not a very competitive high school in the central valley
Took a gap semester after graduating. Wasn’t planning on going to college and continue working on small business. Also, didn’t think I’d get in anywhere. Took classes at CC to keep parents happy and be a good example for my little sister.
College Info: 3 years to transfer GPA: 3.78 Major: Computer Science or Electrical Engineering
ECs - Volunteer Physics, CS, English, and Math tutor at CC and neighborhood kids
No Awards
Letter of Rec (Needed for USC): 1. From Honors DirectoPhilosophy professor did honors project with him. He and I would talk for several hours at least once a month. The only professor that knew about my past and the above business. Always said I acted super professional. Lol 2. Physics Professor: Easily the hardest class I’ve taken. Then again, he had just graduated with his Ph.D. + his first-time teaching. He and I would talk every week for at least an hour.
Essays: Wrote essays the day the application was due. (Going describe broadly; Don’t want to be recognized) Wrote about being in speech therapy for 5 years and learning English. Mentoring/sacrificing for my Sister in school/life so she can have a better life. Creating a small business out of desperation to help my family. How I began to value education.
Applied: UC Berkeley (Accepted), UCSD (Accepted), USC (Accepted), UCI (Rejected), UCSC (Accepted), UCD (Rejected), and UCLA (Accepted). Safeties: SJSU (Accepted) and Sac state (Accepted) I know exactly why I was rejected from those two. Irvine and Davis required Calc 1 and 2 to be taken at CC A but I had to take my little sister to CC B from high school and back since she was taking Calc 1. The class at CC A was at the same time as her class. So, I took it at CC B.
What happy that I did know in hindsight:
What I would do differently knowing what I know now: 1. Take GE online at several community colleges at the same time. To find out what classes count for what requirement at a different CC use this site https://cvc.edu/ Why? 1. More choices in professors leading to easier and fun classes. 2. Transfer faster. If I could do it again, I’d take 20-30 units of GEs a semester. 2. Apply for internships with DOE labs. Here’s a program specifically for CC students https://science.osti.gov/wdts/cci 3. Reprogram my mind. I had way too much old software running telling that I’m a loser, failure, to end it all. That held me back a lot in life and school. Meditation and taking actions every day toward your goals helps out a lot
Conclusion: I ended going to UC Berkeley for CS. Closer to home and it's rigorous which the environment I want to be in. Also. Super cheap in total will cost me $30k in comparison to the value it brings.

2020.09.28 18:13 partypastor Unreached People Group of the Week - Manihar of India

Welcome back to our UPG of the week posts! Meet the Manihar in India!
How Unreached Are They?
The Manihar are 0.00% Christian. That means at best there are a handful of believers among the 562,000 of them.
There is a completed Bible in their language.
What are they like?
Typical qualification that all people groups can't be summed up in small paragraphs and this is an over generalization.
The business of making and selling of bangles has long been the livelihood of Manihar communities. Due to the limited availability of elephant tusks for ivory, many bangles and beads now are manufactured in plastics. Today some Manihar take other jobs including tailoring. The literacy rate among the Manihar tends to be low. They speak primary Nepali and use Urdu and Bhojpuri in Nepal and mainly Urdu and Hindi in India. They are Sunni Muslims and tend to share foods with other Muslim families but traditionally do not allow marriage outside their community. Siddiqi can be a common surname. Joshua Project
The Manihar are mostly engaged in their traditional business of making and selling glass and lac bangles known locally as churi or chuda. Alongside these standard wares, some of them also sell goods like cosmetics, tikli (forehead jewelry) and sealing wax. Theirs is a cottage industry, both men and women working together in their homes from where they sell directly to customers and to local shopkeepers. Some own small factories.
They are highly skilled at making bangles, creating intricate designs, of every color, shapes and sizes. In Gujarat, the Manihar used to make bangles from ivory, but due to international bans on elephant tusks they now make the ornately carved bangles from plastic as well as glass. Some of the Manihar, such as those in Uttar Pradesh have taken up tailoring as an occupation while some are self-employed as rickshaw drivers, poultry farmers, and vegetable sellers. A few of them are government employees while others are wage labourers. There are a few businessmen and office workers among them.
The Manihar are strictly prohibited from eating pork by their Islamic faith. Their staple food includes wheat, millet and rice, supplemented by lentils, vegetables and occasional seasonal fruit. They drink milk and dairy products but do not have alcohol or opium. Use of tobacco products like zarda (flavoured chewing tobacco), bidi (rolled tendu leaves) and paan (betel) is common among them. Fine vermicelli cooked in rich, sweetened milk is the traditional sweet served on festive occasions like the termination of the forty-day fast.
The Manihar do send their children, mostly boys, to school. Some may reach college level. Daughters finish at primary school due to socio-economic reasons. The literacy levels of some states like Gujarat, is very low. People Groups of India
History Lesson
The word Manihar is derived from Man, meaning jewel in Urdu, and the agentive sufix har. Their traditional Landlords and merchants are also known as saudagar, this word being derived from they claims descent from the first Caliph of Islam, Abu Bakr, and as such are sub-group of the Siddiqui Manihar community. Wikipedia
They migrated from the Sindh region of Pakistan about two hundred years ago. People Groups of India
What do they believe?
The Manihar are 100% Muslim.
How can we pray for them?
Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. (Romans 10:1)

https://preview.redd.it/f4eypmc01up51.png?width=1287&format=png&auto=webp&s=a6551248f2c3f76c96cd7cf621ca5f47a89f47ff
The apps section connects you to the Shopify app store where you can choose from a wide variety of apps to optimize your store then we have the sales channels first up is the online store Channel here you can create and design a new theme from the theme library change your theme template or customize your theme as for your requirement blog posts to create relevant and informative blogs to engage users on your store then we have pages section to create standalone pages for your store the navigation details out your menus the footer in the main menu to ease out your store navigation create new domain on Shopify or connect your existing domain by going to the domains section.
Next up is preferences where you can select your SEO preferences add your meta description set up your Google Analytics and Facebook pixel accounts right down there you have your settings section where you can see all the information that you can change at the back end of your store the settings menu lets you add your store details provide the payment provider info where you can choose the payment method feed in your stock inventory at the location had your store information in multiple languages to reach a wider audience you can also customize your checkout systems billing information and a lot more the Files section lets you upload product images posts and other documents the settings tab also gives you access to manage order shipping your stores legal pages tax information and add or restrict store permissions.
The settings tab lets you manage your store's legal pages like the refund policy privacy policy in terms of service download high-resolution images from burst by Shopify or from pixabay pixels are free pic for free there are free logo making websites like Placid free logo design org and others where you can create apt logos as for your needs first let's check what all comes under the online store let's go to the navigation menu which includes the main in the footer menu under the main menu you can remove any menu item you don't want to show up in here click on the add menu item tab to add and customize what shows up in your main menu for now we are using hashtags which will later be replaced by links to different collections and standalone pages you can even add sub menus like women men and kids and put them under the shop by category section after you saved the main menu information.
Let's check out the footer menu section here too you can remove or add the menu items you want to display in the footer section of your store add links to important documents like the privacy policy the refund policy Terms of Service FAQ page contact us section and save the info once this is done your header and footer section are fairly optimized with easy navigation to all the different sections and pages of your store now let's check how you can add collections to your store simply click on collections and go to create collections then add the collection title you can then choose if you want a manual collection or an automated collection manual collection lets you add your collections one by one you can select an apt collection image for the collection category you wish to create.
Once you're done click on save on the same page you can choose to create another collection category just change the title add a description check if it's manual or automated select an image and save the changes let's create a kids collection in a best-seller category too now we have four categories of collections women men kids and bestsellers your store is incomplete without product details so we'll now go to the all products section and click on add product under the women collection we can add something like a black backless dress in the description section we'll just put in a relevant description for the product next add high-resolution images in different angles add the actual price and compare at price of the product you can include taxes to the inventory SKU available units in the country where the product has been created remember to include the product type the vendors name collection name and relevant tags to help people search your product easily.
When you click Save you get the option to preview your product page as it looks right now scroll down to see if all the product images have been added in the sequence you want it you can now go back and add some color and size variants for this product let's add the basic size options here and the available color options here you will then be able to see a whole list of variants with their prices available quantities SKU numbers in arcode you can upload the images for all these variants one by one add these images in the variants list below with each of the variants save the changes in preview check if you're able to select the sizes and colors and if all the variant images have been uploaded for the product you can see that now we can add to cart and also buy it with a simple click on Buy Now button.
Next click on the online store tab then click on pages section to create standalone pages simply click on add page and add the pages you want to create here we are first creating an about Us page along with its detailed content once you save you can view your page you can add more pages for example FAQ page where you can answer all the questions commonly asked about your products view these pages once before you create other essential pages for your store.
https://preview.redd.it/c0cbg6u31up51.png?width=1265&format=png&auto=webp&s=7dcd91013d5f9f1c0bc45ba3bd6c2ce72fd0db23
Create a refund policy page a privacy policy page with the text contents that we created from the legal tab of the settings section to build credibility and Trust for your brand your Terms of Service page would let your users know about the terms and conditions of your brand only when your users read and agree to these terms they will be able to proceed with checkout on your store view all your pages and at other pages is required for example the contact us page including your phone number email ID and store address change the template to page contact to show the contact form.
Next let's check out how to add blog posts it's as simple as clicking on create blog post adding a blog title and the blog content select and upload a relevant featured image add the author name give tags and make the blog visible if we click view here we'll be able to see how the blog post looks in the navigation menu add links to all the pages you may also choose to filter collection with tags for the women and men categories now that we've added blog and contact us pages we can add links to them as well likewise we can add links in the footer menu for the privacy policy Terms of Service refund policy FAQ and contact us pages.
Now let's see how we can set up the store with the design and layout for this we will go to themes we have the debut theme which we are currently using we also have access to free themes and themes from the Shopify theme store when we click on customize you can see that we have the complete layout of how the site would look we have different sections here which can all be customized let's go to theme settings and select colors to adjust the store's color.
Next the topography section lets you change the font for the heading we chose months are at four headings and buttons and also for the body text you can choose any font you like click Save to save all the changes after this we go to sections to change the alignment we make the header centrally aligned here you can also add a logo image from your gallery or upload one from the free images section customize the logo width as per your preference this also gives you the option to edit your main menu add an announcement bar to your store and include the text you want to show on the announcement bar modify the color of the announcement bar if you like add a link for the page to where you want to redirect the announcement bar.
https://preview.redd.it/eko00sc61up51.png?width=1323&format=png&auto=webp&s=32ac391ee10e201fd6be2fd9238dc635c3562ce3
So now we have the store heading announcement bar displaying our offer and all the pages of the main menu it also shows the featured collection and the collection carousel on the home page you can also change the order of how things appear on the home page separately click on each of the options like image with text overlay in the slideshow section which is really the hero banner the slide height can be modified to let's say adapt to first image let's keep the text size to medium in the alignment to middle Center you can choose to auto-rotate slides as well upload the image you want to showcase in the slider so now you have a nice image in the background we uploaded an image from our gallery you can also opt for free images give a suitable heading and subheading to the slider add a button label this is a call to action or CTA button.
So the content must be prompt and actionable make this CTA button clickable by adding a button link add some more images for the next slides and follow the same process add a heading subheading and CTA button for this fashion store we are adding women men and kids collections as sliders once this is done save and go back to the sections and add another section let's add a collection list so we can have separate images for the women men kids and bestseller collections simply click on edit collection to further edit each of these collections from the collection list this opens up to the collections page where you can add more collection images let's upload another image for the women's collection the same way we can add more collection images for the kids and Men collection in the collections section we will add the men in kids collections so that the images for all these collections come right up.
Now let's edit the collection list heading to featured collection so now you can move this featured collection section right after the slideshow the earlier featured collection section down below can then be named featured products here you can add bestseller products and customize the layout by selecting the products per row and the total number of rows check the view all button tab so that we can view all the bestseller products so now we have the image slider a menu here and the featured collection and featured products ready let's fix the image with text section and upload an apt image change the heading to about us add some text that talks about your motivation behind the brand and the value it adds to the users life next add a CTA button and Link it to the about Us page once you save your changes you have all your home page sections pretty much sorted.

RTI responses from MP and Meghalaya show compliance failure with the Anuradha Bhasin Internet Shutdown decision

https://preview.redd.it/089prmkystp51.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=2ad74c51ae2347e39e211f895487d397ac0cadb0

tl;dr

Responses to Right to Information requests filed with the states of Madhya Pradesh and Meghalaya seeking information about reported internet shutdowns in these states show that there is a failure to comply with the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s decision in the matter of Anuradha Bhasin v Union of India (2020 SCC OnLine SC 25).

Background

Post the Anuradha Bhasin decision, we came across multiple media reports wherein it was reported that internet shutdowns were still being done by states without publishing the legal orders under which these internet shutdowns were imposed.
In that decision, the Supreme Court, while deciding the constitutionality of the internet shutdown imposed in Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019, held that all internet shutdown orders must be proactively published by the government.
“It must be noted that although the Suspension Rules does not provide for publication or notification of the orders, a settled principle of law, and of natural justice, is that an order, particularly one that affects lives, liberty and property of people, must be made available …. We are therefore required to read in the requirement of ensuring that all the orders passed under the Suspension Rules are made freely available, through some suitable mechanism. ”
As a result we wrote to all the concerned state governments seeking proactive publication of internet shutdown orders in accordance with the judgement of the Supreme Court in Anuradha Bhasin v. Union of India. However, we did not receive any response from the state governments.
As a next step, we filed Right to Information requests with the states in question wherein we asked them to:
  1. Provide us with copies of the internet shutdown orders based on which the specific shutdowns took place.
  2. State whether they had complied with the decision of the Supreme Court in Anuradha Bhasin v. Union of India and if not, the reasons for the failure to comply.
  3. Provide us with copies of all orders through which internet shutdowns took place in their state in 2020.

Responses received

A. Madhya Pradesh

In their reply dated September 3, 2020, “C” Section of Home Department of the Government of Madhya Pradesh stated that the internet shutdown related information that we asked for relates to their department and that they were exempted from disclosure under the RTI Act u/s 24. Section 24 of the RTI Act states that “certain organisations” such as intelligence and security organisations do not come under the purview of the act and can be exempted from disclosure if the government specifically exempts them by notification in the Official Gazette. The Government of Madhya Pradesh has accordingly exempted “C” Section of the Home Department from disclosures which acts as a deterrent to demanding transparency for internet shutdowns in the state.

B. Meghalaya

In their reply dated September 15, 2020, the Home (Political) Department of the Government of Meghalaya has, in response to our query about compliance with the Anuradha Bhasin decision, stated that the department is not aware of the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s decision in the matter since they did not receive it. This depicts a clear signal failure due to which the state government has not been made aware of the decision.

9 months on, still no compliance with the Anuradha Bhasin decision

These responses make it clear that states and the Centre have failed to comply with the Anuradha Bhasin decision due to various reasons, whether it is wilful disobedience or due to signal failure. As we have stated previously, publication of internet shutdown orders and proper record-keeping is essential for two reasons. First, without access to internet shutdown orders, citizens cannot exercise their fundamental right to seek judicial review of arbitrary or disproportionate restrictions on internet access. Second, internet shutdowns cause huge economic losses and maintaining a consolidated record of all internet shutdowns imposed at the state and central level is necessary for evidence based policy reform.
Without official publication of orders, the only source of information about internet shutdowns in different parts of the country is media reports. However, the figures derived based on media reports do not represent the full scale of the problem and may fail to include shutdowns which are shorter in duration or localized in small towns and villages.
In any case, even the limited information which is available through media reports suggests that internet shutdowns are being ordered by government officials who are not authorized under the law. For instance, media reports indicate that internet shutdowns in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal were ordered by District Magistrates who are not empowered to exercise powers under the Telecom Suspension Rules 2017. Prior to 2017, internet shutdowns were ordered by District Magistrates under Section 144, Code of Criminal Procedure 1973. However, in Anuradha Bhasin v. Union of India, the Supreme Court has clarified that the position of law has changed after notification of the Rules in 2017 and the procedure prescribed under the Rules must be followed prior to imposing internet shutdowns.

2020.09.28 04:28 StevenStevens43 The Gaelic uprisings

The Gaelic uprisings
The real Arvirargus revealed:
To find out why "Marius" in the quote below, is almost definitely the same person as Sallustius Lucullus, you will need to first read my previous article to establish why this is.
Reading this article without first establishing the basic foundations, will deem this article useless.
So i will leave a link right here below, for the article you should first read, before coming back and reading this one.
Sallustius Lucullus
Link for article
Marius:
Now i will introduce Sallustius Lucullus/Marius.
The legendary Marius is the son of the legendary Arvirargus.
Marius
Marius was a legendary king of the Britons) during the time of the Roman occupation of Britain, as recounted in Geoffrey of Monmouth's pseudohistorical Historia Regum Britanniae. He was the son of King Arvirargus and ruled following his father's death.
Arvirargus:
And in turn, the legendary Arvirargus is the son of the legendary Kimbelinus.
According to Geoffrey, Arvirargus is a son of the former king Kimbelinus. Arvirargus
Kimbelinus:
However, it turns out that Kimbelinus is not legendary in the slightest.
Archaelogists have found his coins all over southern britain, marked "rex", which means he was a client king for the Romans.
Also he is written about in Roman records.
Quite simply, he is the same person as Cunobelinus, and Kimbelinus is simply a his name in a different dialect.
Cunobeline
Cunobeline (or Cunobelin, from Latin Cunobelinus, derived from Common Brittonic \Cunobelinos* "Strong as a Dog", "Strong Dog") was a king in pre-Roman Britain from about AD 9 until about AD 40.[1] He is mentioned in passing by the classical historians Suetonius and Dio Cassius, and many coins bearing his inscription have been found. He controlled a substantial portion of south-eastern Britain, including the territories of the Catuvellauni and the Trinovantes, and is called "King of the Britons" (Britannorum rex) by Suetonius.[2] He appears to have been recognized by Roman emperor Augustus as a client king, as testified by the use of the Latin title Rex on his coins. Cunobeline appears in British legend as Cynfelyn (Welsh), Kymbelinus (medieval Latin) or Cymbeline, as in the play by William Shakespeare.

Coins of Cunobelinus
Sallustius Lucullius:
Now not much more is known about Sellustius Lucallius beyond him having likely been a consul, aswell as a client king before being executed in 85 AD when the Roman empire began doing away with their client kings in favour of more direct ownership of British lands.
Also if you find it unbelievable that a Gaelic speaking Celt named Marius might have a Latinised name of "Sallustius Lucullus", then i will leave a photo of the Roman emperor Caligula.
Sallustius Lucullus
Anything more about Lucullus is conjecture or inference: for example, since every other known governor of Roman Britain had been a consul prior to being appointed governor, it is reasonable to assume Lucullus also had been consul; since all of the consuls from the year 85 until past the death of Domitian are known, he must have been consul before the year 85.
Link for photo
Marble bust of Roman emperor Caligula
Amminus:
Now, if you have read my previous article, and you still have doubts about them being the same person, then know, that everything i have said, is pretty much now accepted as a contemporary theory amongst contemporary historians and scholars, as confirmed confirmed below.
But, from now on, i will use the name Marius to remain consistant with popular opinion.
Sallustius Lucullus
A second theory was proposed by Dr. Miles Russell of Bournemouth University. An inscription from Chichester, recorded by Samuel Woodford in his Inscriptionum Romano-Britannicarum Conllectio (1658) but since lost, refers to Sallustius Lucullus, giving his praenomen as Gaius and describing him as a propraetorian legate of the emperor Domitian. Another inscription from Chichester, discovered in 1923, refers to a "Lucullus, son of Amminus". Russell argues that this is the same Lucullus, and that his father was the native British prince Amminus, son of Cunobelinus, who fled to Rome c. 40.
Boudica:
Now Marius would have been at his prime just around the time of the Boudica revolt in 60 AD.
Boudica
Boudica or Boudicca (UK: /ˈbuːdɪkə, boʊˈdɪkə/, US: /buːˈdɪkə/), also known as Boadicea (/ˌboʊ(ə)dɪˈsiːə/, also US: /ˌboʊæd-/) or Boudicea, and in Welsh as Buddug (IPA: [ˈbɨðɨɡ]),[1][2] was a queen of the British Celtic Iceni tribe who led an uprising against the conquering forces of the Roman Empire in AD 60 or 61. She died shortly after its failure and was said to have poisoned herself. She is considered a British folk hero.[3]
Link for photo_by_John_Opie.jpg)
Boudicea painting
Roman conquest:
Of course, the uprising was caused by the Roman empire trying to take ownership of the kingdoms and lands.
They were previously self governing provences that had good trade relations with Rome.
But when Boudiceas husband died, his will was ignored by the emperor, who done the same to Boudica as he was doing to other client kings and queens, and he took Boudicas kingdom from her.
According to Tacitus, he also turned her in to a slave, and she and her daughters also raped.
Boudica
Boudica's husband Prasutagus, with whom she had two children whose names are unknown, ruled as a nominally independent ally of Rome, and left his kingdom jointly to his daughters and to the Roman emperor in his will. However, when he died, his will was ignored, and the kingdom was annexed and his property taken. According to Tacitus, Boudica was flogged and her daughters raped.[4] Cassius Dio explains Boudica's response by saying that previous imperial donations to influential Britons were confiscated and the Roman financier and philosopher Seneca called in the loans he had forced on the reluctant Britons.[5]

Uprising:
Boudica and her Iceni tribe led an uprising which almost removed the Roman empire from Britain, by destroying Roman Britains most important settlements.
Boudica
In AD 60 or 61, when the Roman governor Gaius Suetonius Paulinus was campaigning on the island of Mona (modern Anglesey) on the northwest coast of Wales, Boudica led the Iceni, the Trinovantes, and others in revolt.[6] They destroyed Camulodunum (modern Colchester), earlier the capital of the Trinovantes but at that time a colonia), a settlement for discharged Roman soldiers and site of a temple to the former Emperor Claudius. Upon hearing of the revolt, Suetonius hurried to Londinium (modern London), the 20-year-old commercial settlement that was the rebels' next target. He lacked sufficient numbers to defend the settlement, and he evacuated and abandoned Londinium. Boudica led a very large army of Iceni, Trinovantes, and others against a detachment of Legio IX Hispana, defeating them, and burning Londinium and Verulamium.
Link for photo.jpg)
Boo! And her daughters
Suicide:
The end result was defeat.
She is thought to have died of an illness.
Possibly self enduced poisoning, to avoid enslavement.
Boudica
The crisis caused Nero to consider withdrawing all Roman forces from Britain, but Suetonius's victory over Boudica confirmed Roman control of the province. Boudica then either killed herself to avoid capture (according to Tacitus),[8]
Gaelic:
Now, does it seem a bit unbelievable that one single warrior princess and her Iceni tribe could achieve all this?
Well what you have to remember, is the Gaelic language during this period, was spoken all over Gaul, and before the Roman conquests, Gaul was a very large area, taking in much of europe and beyond, as i revealed in my article "From Gaul to Galilee".
But Boudica was known throughout Gaul, in many different Gaulish/Gaelic dialects, suggesting she was well connected.
Name
The Gaulish version is attested in inscriptions as Boudiga in Bordeaux, Boudica in Lusitania, and Bodicca in Algeria.[13]

Pre-roman Gaul
Loyalty:
Now, Marius, who was likely executed in 85 AD by the Romans, was loyal to the Romans right until the death.
Marius
Marius established close ties with Rome and good diplomacy through tribute and respect of the Roman citizens in Britain. He followed the laws of his ancestors and ruled justly. When he died, he was succeeded by his son, Coilus.
Agricola:
And back to this Sallustius Lucullus/Marius for just a second.
Sallustius Lucullus is thought to have been part of Roman attempts of expansion in to Albany/Caledonia/Scotland, and he allied himself with Agricola during Agricolas conquest of Caledonia attempt, just before his execution.
Military activity
Archaeology can tell us something of Roman military activity in the years following Agricola's recall in 84. Sallustius (or his unknown predecessor, if one existed) may have attempted to consolidate Agricola's victories in Scotland by building the Glen Forts which Peter Salway dates to his rule. Forts at Ardoch and Dalswinton in southern Scotland, which Agricola had built, were extensively rebuilt in the late 80s and evidence of improvements of other military installations in the region points to a strong presence in the Scots Lowlands.

Agricolas northern campaign
De facto king of Albany:
And the client kingdom that Marius ruled, would appear to have been the equivalent of todays Northumbria, and Scotland.
He was likely the de-facto king of Albany, though possibly not recognised by Picts, Scots and Gaels as such.
Marius
According to Geoffrey, he ruled wisely in the time when the Picts first arrived in Britain. A fleet of ships under the leadership of Sodric came from Scythia and landed in Albany. Once there, they began to destroy the lands and Marius was forced to react. Following numerous battles, Marius killed Sodric and set up a stone there to remember that triumph. In addition, that land became known as Westmorland after him.
Link for photo
Westmorland
Picts:
And as you may have read in the above quote, it is believed by Geoffrey that Marius was attacked by Picts that arrived in Albany from Scythia.
And as has already been established in previous articles, Scythia was an area in Eurasia that was led by the aristocratic Royal Scoloti.
It is also hardly surprising that there are Gaels fleeing to Albany, as Scythia is also coming under Roman attack, during this period.
Scythians
.[10][13] Based in what is modern-day Ukraine and southern Russia, the Scythians called themselves Scoloti and were led by a nomadic warrior aristocracy known as the Royal Scythians.
Link for photo
Scythia
Tuathal Techtmar:
Now, it just so happens, in Irish legends, around this "exact same period", an Irish high king named Tuathal Techtmar was brought up in Albany/Caledonia which was his Mothers original homeland before she moved to Ireland to marry the high king of Ireland, who got overthrown, causing her to return to Albany.
However Tuathal Techtmar ended up returning to Ireland at around the age of 20 years, and fought a war to reclaim the throne of Irish high king.
He would also have been an enemy of Marius one would assume, as Marius appears to be trying to appear as the Roman client king of Albany, and Tuathal Techtmar is also of indigenous Albion kingship.
Legend
Later versions of the story suppress the involvement of the provincial nobility in the revolt, making the "subject peoples" the peasants of Ireland. The Lebor Gabála Érenn[6] adds the detail of Túathal's exile. His mother, Eithne Imgel, daughter of the king of Alba (originally meaning Britain, later Scotland), was pregnant when Fíachu was overthrown, and fled to her homeland where she gave birth to Túathal. Twenty years later Túathal and his mother returned to Ireland, joined up with Fiacha Cassán and Findmall, and marched on Tara to take the kingship.
Dates:
According to Keating, the timing is absolutely perfect.
He was in Albany from 55 AD until 80 AD, and died in 100 AD.
Dates
Geoffrey Keating's Foras Feasa ar Érinn broadly agrees, dating his exile to 55, his return to 80 and his death to 100.
Caithness:
Now the end result of this war with Marius was defeat.
Though Marius was kind enough to allow them to have the area of Caithness, which the Picts refused in favour of going to Ireland.
Though some almost definitely remained.
Marius
In respect for the people he defeated, he gave them a small portion of Albany called Caithness to live in. Marius refused, however, to give them women to marry so the Picts fled to Ireland and took wives there.
Link for photo
Caithness
Kingdom of Cat:
And the word Caithness, does indeed come from the Picts, that lived in the Kingdom of Cat, after the name of their tribe.
Toponymy
The Caith element of Caithness comes from the name of a Pictish tribe known as the Cat or Catt people, or Catti (see Kingdom of Cat)
Link for photo
Flag of Caithness
Gaelic dialect:
And whilst all Gaelic languages are connected, there are many variations.
Toponymy
The Gaelic name for Caithness, Gallaibh, means "among the strangers" (the Norse). The Catti are represented in the Gaelic name for eastern Sutherland, Cataibh,[2] and the old Gaelic name for Shetland, Innse Chat.
Pictish language:
And whilst the Pictish language is Gaelic, and connected to the Brythonic language, it is still of different dialect to others.
They could probably still hold somekind of conversation with eachother however.
Picts
Early medieval sources report the existence of a distinct Pictish language, which today is believed to have been an Insular Celtic language, closely related to the Brittonic spoken by the Britons) who lived to the south.

Irish high king:
Now, obviously Tuathal Techtmar did not just walk in to Ireland and get the vote of the people.
He obviously had an army that followed him to Ireland and fought for his return, and he is attributed to have fought very hard for this.
Legend
Túathal fought 25 battles against Ulster, 25 against Leinster, 25 against Connacht and 35 against Munster. The whole country subdued, he convened a conference at Tara, where he established laws and annexed territory from each of the four provinces to create the central province of Míde (Meath)) around Tara as the High King's territory. He built four fortresses in Meath: Tlachtga, where the druids sacrificed on the eve of Samhain, on land taken from Munster; Uisneach, where the festival of Beltaine was celebrated, on land from Connacht; Tailtiu, where Lughnasadh was celebrated, on land from Ulster; and Tara, on land from Leinster.
Irish Gaelic:
Now, Ireland was most likely already a Gaelic speaking country.
But legends state that during the invasion of Tuathal Techtmar, the current day Irish gaelic language emerged.
In fact, the legends even express a belief that the invasion of Tuathal Techtmar was a complete foreign invasion from start to finish, by foreigners.
Therefore, i think scholar T.F.O'Rahily is mistaken when he says that Irish legends are rehashing earlier return exile stories.
Whilst there were earlier invasions, i think there is plenty evidence to suggest that the invasion being discussed here, is an entirely different invasion to one that may have happened in the 1st or 2nd century BC.
The invasionbeing spoken about, and the language spoken by the invaders, was probably the form of Gaelic spoken by the Scythian based Gaels which first invaded Albany, before moving on to Ireland..
They perhaps did not even speak the same dialect of Gaelic as other Picts in other regions that have evolved in an ever so slight different direction.
Goidels
The scholar T. F. O'Rahilly suggested that, as in many such "returned exile" stories, Túathal represented an entirely foreign invasion which established a dynasty in Ireland, whose dynastic propagandists fabricated an Irish origin for him to give him some spurious legitimacy. In fact, he proposed that Túathal's story, pushed back to the 1st or 2nd century BC, represented the invasion of the Goidels, who established themselves over the earlier populations and introduced the Q-Celtic language that would become Irish,
Puppet:
There is however a quite contemporary theory that Tuathal may have actually been a Roman puppet.
Romans in Ireland
Taking the native dating as broadly accurate, another theory has emerged. The Roman historian Tacitus mentions that Agricola, while governor of Roman Britain (AD 78–84), entertained an exiled Irish prince, thinking to use him as a pretext for a possible conquest of Ireland.[10]
Evidence of Roman occupation:
Archaeologists have in fact found evidence of Roman settlement in the areas most consistant with Tuathals war campaigns in Ireland.
Romans in Ireland
.[10] Neither Agricola nor his successors ever conquered Ireland, but in recent years archaeology has challenged the belief that the Romans never set foot on the island. Roman and Romano-British artefacts have been found primarily in Leinster, notably a fortified site on the promontory of Drumanagh, fifteen miles north of Dublin, and burials on the nearby island of Lambay, both close to where Túathal is supposed to have landed, and other sites associated with Túathal such as Tara and Clogher.
Military support:
Contemporary historians and scholars tend to actually believe that Tuathals campaign was supported by the Romans to have a friendly king that will put a stop to the Irish raids happening on mainland Britain, as well as of course for other future possibilities and obvious reasons.
Romans in Ireland
It is possible that the Romans may have given support to Túathal, or someone like him, to regain his throne in the interests of having a friendly neighbour who could restrain Irish raiding.[5][11] The 2nd-century Roman poet Juvenal, who may have served in Britain under Agricola, wrote that "arms had been taken beyond the shores of Ireland",[12] and the coincidence of dates is striking.
Hibernia:
And it is quite contemporary that Agricola did indeed give support and refuge to an exiled Irish king, in the hope he would be useful for a future conquest of Ireland.
Hibernia
[9] Agricola fortified the coast facing Ireland, and Tacitus recalls that his father-in-law often claimed the island could be conquered with a single legion and auxiliaries). He had given refuge to an exiled Irish king whom he hoped he might use as the excuse for conquest.
Link for photo
Agricola
Summary:
It sounds like the uprising was a lot bigger and more co-ordinated than simply one she-wolf.
It probably included Irish raiders, and even Picts from afar afield as Scythia.
It would all have been part of the war against the Roman empire.
As for the case with the Picts.
It sounds like Agricola gave them refuge from Marius most likely.
May have even used the inhumane way that Marius was treating them as justification for executing him, thus removing yet another client king, at the same time as gaining an allied army to invade and conquer Ireland.
Though, if this was the reason, then it was all fruitless, as no conquest of Ireland would ever be followed through by the Romans.

One of my most accomplished former students is Stephanie Cobb, now the George and Sallie Cutchin Camp Professor of Bible in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Richmond. While doing her PhD at UNC, Stephanie became deeply interested in the accounts of martyrdom in early Christianity, leading to a dissertation with one of the best titles ever (it really does describe the book but it’s unusually clever): Dying to be Men: Gender and Language in Early Christian Martyr Texts.
Stephanie has become one of the leading experts in this field, backed up now with an intriguing and important second book on the martyr texts. It will be of particular interest to members of the blog and so I’ve asked Stephanie to make some guest posts about it. Here is the first.
Bart recently asked if I would be interested in writing a few posts about my latest book, Divine Deliverance: Pain and Painlessness in Early Christian Martyr Texts. But before diving into Divine Deliverance itself, I want to back up for a moment to talk a bit about what I love so much about early Christian martyr texts. I became fascinated by these (mostly 2nd and 3rd cen. ce) accounts in grad school. My first sustained study of them—Dying to be Men: Gender and Language in Early Christian Martyr Texts—looked at the ways martyr texts utilized gendered language to make arguments about Christian superiority over against pagans and Jews, on the one hand, and to dictate a normative gendered hierarchy within the Christian community, on the other hand. As I worked on this book, scouring the Greek and Latin texts carefully for gendered language and allusions, I stumbled upon another sort of language that I wasn’t expecting and that, to be honest, confounded me: over and over again, in a variety of different ways, these texts claimed that the martyrs did not feel pain when they were tortured!
And so, Divine Deliverance, at its core, asks a rather simple question: “Does martyrdom hurt?” The answer may seem so obvious as to make the question ridiculous. These texts talk about Christians being burned alive, thrown into the amphitheater to face gladiators or beasts, being hanged by their thumbs, and a wide assortment of other kinds of tortures that I’m fairly certain hurt a lot. The point of torture was to entice Christians to deny their faith and return to the traditional religions of the Roman empire. Pain was a judicial tool used by the Roman government. Pain not only worked to push individuals to deny their faith, since it was typically publicly inflicted, it served as a deterrent for others. Every tool in the prosecutors’ tool bag inflicted some sort of pain—whether psychological, physiological, or emotional. So, martyrdom must hurt.
Theologically speaking, moreover, the point of these narratives must surely be—right?—to communicate to audiences the details of the torture and execution of these exceptional Christians. For most of us, I think, the martyrs stand as exemplary individuals who withstood excruciating pain in order to faithfully witness to Jesus. (The term “martyr,” by the way means “to witness” in Greek; it is judicial language that Christians appropriated and eventually applied to those who testified in court and were executed for doing so.) When we hear about their travails, we might wince and wonder whether we have what it takes to do what they did. They are the superheroes of Christianity: they have powers that we can’t imagine having ourselves, and they use them to build up the faith. As the third-century North African Christian, Tertullian, famously said: “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.”
Indeed, it is precisely the detailed descriptions of the dissolution of bodies that has led scholars to the consensus that Christian authors of this period specifically focused on Christian suffering. This interest was part and parcel of a larger social movement—as Judith Perkins argues in her wonderful analysis of Christianity of this period in The Suffering Self: Pain and Narrative Representation in the Early Christian Era—that acknowledged, for the first time, bodies that feel pain and experience suffering. She calls this new cultural representation the “suffering self.” Authors of this period—Roman, Jewish, and Christian—began discussing in some detail the experiences of the suffering body: twisted ankles, intestinal distresses, fevers, disembowelment. Christian writings of the period, it could be argued, are all concerned—at some level—about persecution/prosecution, suffering, and their effects on the faith. Perkins rightly notes that stories of individuals in Christian literature have a social function much larger than communicating one person’s experience: they simultaneously describe the individual and social body. If the second century bishop, Ignatius, anticipated he would face “fire and cross, packs of beasts, dissections, divisions, scattering of bones, chopping up of limbs, grinding up of the entire body,” he was also describing what Christianity at large should expect. To be a Christian, Perkins argues, is to suffer.
Didn’t Jesus and Paul, after all, teach that their followers should expect rejection and suffering? In Matthew 5, Jesus tells his followers to pray for those who persecute them. They should expect, that is, to suffer. In Luke 14, Jesus teaches that only those who “take up the cross” are his disciples. In Mark 13, Jesus followers are told they will be hated by everyone. In Matthew 23, Jesus predicts that some of those listening to him will be crucified. Paul speaks often of his own imprisonment and torture. (2 Cor 11; 1 Thess 2; Rom 8; Gal 6). He recites this history as a way of authenticating his faith. As heirs of these texts and traditions, then, surely the martyr texts anticipate and value bodily suffering. It fulfills Jesus’ prophecies and, like Paul’s, differentiates true from false Christians. This understanding of Christian pain is not only biblical, though. Pope Benedict XVI taught that true Christian love entails suffering. “The cross,” he explained, “reminds us that there is no true love without suffering, there is no gift without pain.” (https://zenit.org/articles/benedict-xvi-no-suffering-no-love/) Christian identity—both individually and corporately—seems inextricably connected with bodily pain.
Does martyrdom hurt? Despite all that I’ve said above. Despite the sensibleness of these arguments and the obviousness of the answer “yes,” in Divine Deliverance I argue that the martyr texts reflect a very different approach to the question. These ancient discussions of Christian martyrdom reveal an abiding interest in the insensitivity of the Christian body during torture and martyrdom. Claims to painlessness are crucial to the texts’ work of (re-)defining Christianity in the ancient world: while Christians could not deny the reality that they were subject to state violence, they could argue that they were not ultimately vulnerable to its painful effects. Thus early Christian texts distinguish categories that modern readers tend to collapse: torture and suffering, injury and pain. The martyrs are tortured and injured but they do not experience suffering and pain. Texts produced between the second and fourth centuries reflect Christian communities’ interactions with their contemporaries—pagans, Jews, and other Christians—and the development of their belief systems. The martyr texts’ claims to impassibility (the martyrs’ inability to feel pain) and/or impassivity (the martyrs’ lack of response to pain) have repercussions not only for the power structures undergirding Roman violence but also for the development of Christology, ecclesiology, and eschatology. And that will be the subject of my next post.

How Could Torture Not Hurt?? Guest Post by Stephanie Cobb

Here now is the second of three posts by Stephanie Cobb on her recent book about early Christian accounts of the martyrs. As you’ll see, she makes some rather astonishing and counter-intuitive claims. But I think she’s completely right. This is fascinating material….

Stephanie Cobb’s most popular books are Dying to Be Men and Divine Deliverance.
In the previous post, I detailed the reasons martyr texts ought to focus on the suffering and pain of early Christians experiencing torture and being executed for their faith. I also, though, noted that despite those reasons, the texts exhibit an interest in protecting the Christian body from the experience of pain. In this post, we’ll look at some of the ways Christian authors accomplish their goals of illustrating Christian insensitivity to pain.
But first, a quick caveat: in my work, I focus on rhetoric and narrative—not history per se. That is, I am not arguing that torture does not hurt. In fact, I am certain that torture hurts and to deny that is a dangerous political/theological stance to take in the world in which we live. So I want to be crystal clear that I am not making a claim about historical bodies and their insensitivities to judicial torture. There are ways one could make these arguments (i.e., bodies go into shock, etc.) but those arguments go beyond the evidence given in the narratives themselves: they assume the historicity of the narrative account and then try to explain it physiologically. I think that is a rather backwards approach. Instead, I ask about how the rhetoric of painlessness works within the larger narrative world constructed within the martyr text: what does pain represent in the narrative world? What does rejection of pain mean in the narrative world? Who is acting effectively and whose actions are ineffective? By asking these questions—rather than those of history—I hope to get a sense of how these texts functioned for Christian communities in ways that go far beyond recording the death of an individual Christian.
So, turning to these early Christian texts, when we ask of them “Does martyrdom hurt?”, they answer back unequivocally: “no.” This assertion is ubiquitous: it is found in both Greek and Latin texts across the Roman Empire, in stories dating from the mid-second century into the fifth century and beyond. The martyr accounts portray the body being beaten, scraped, clawed, burned, and otherwise attacked, and they simultaneously deny that this injured Christian body feels pain. When the martyr Pamphilus, for instance, is hanged up and scraped with metal claws, he asserts, “I feel no pain” (Mart. Carp. B3.6). Rather than being defeated by torture, Blandina “was renewed by her confession, which resulted in recovery, rest, and insensitivity [analgesia]” (Lyons 1.18). Christian martyrs are—time and again—delivered from the pain of persecution. The thick descriptions of tortured bodies stand in tension with the texts’ claims that martyrs feel no pain.
Although the claims to painlessness are pervasive, they are not identical: while some stories assert impassibility—the inability to feel pain—others focus on the martyrs’ impassivity—their lack of response to torture. But in all cases, the narratives insist that Christian bodies are not fundamentally harmed by persecution. A number of texts, for example, explicitly deny the experience of pain in martyrdom. Some employ the language of “analgesia” or “anesthesia” in their descriptions of the martyrs’ experiences of torture, while others negate terms for pain. We have already seen two examples of this approach above: Pamphilus’s claims not to feel pain and Blandina’s experience of “analgesia” in response to torture. Eusebius offers a second example of Blandina’s insensitivity to pain later in the account: “after the whips, the animals, and the frying pan, finally, having been tossed into a net she was exposed to a bull, and being tossed a long time by the animal, she no longer felt what was happening” (Lyons 1.56). The fourth-century Christian poet, Prudentius, wrote about a martyr named Romanus whose persecutors were “laboring” and “panting” while torturing him, but he remained “at rest.” Romanus explains to his puzzled persecutors: “If you seek, prefect, to know the truth, all of this, all the mangling, is not painful” (Peri. 10.459-60). The prefect himself eventually concedes that Romanus’s “whole body has grown insensible” (10.582). These examples can be multiplied, of course, but I offer one last one that is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful lines in all of the martyr texts: it explains how one of Blandina’s Christian companions was also protected from the physical sensations of torture. The narrator writes, that Sanctus served as a “model for all the others that there is nothing fearful where the Father’s love is, nothing painful where Christ’s glory is” (Lyons 1.23).
While some texts make the bald claim that torture doesn’t hurt, other times the narratives offer slightly more nuanced arguments. In some cases, for example, an author distances the body from the mind/soul. So some anonymous martyrs described in the Martyrdom of Polycarp, “in the hour that they were being tortured . . . had traveled away from the flesh” (2.2). These Christians were “no longer humans but already angels” (2.3). Even before their physical deaths, the author claims, their souls had abandoned their bodies and were already enjoying the rewards of heaven. Similarly, in the Martyrdom of Montanus and Lucius, Cyprian promises Flavian that “the body does not feel this at all when the mind is entirely devoted to God” (21.4).
Yet another approach to Christian insensitivity to judicial pain invokes the reassuring presence of the divine with the martyrs. Pamfilus, for instance, insists: “I feel no pain because I have someone who strengthens me; one whom you are not able to see endures in me” (Mart. Carp. B3.6). In the Passion of Perpetua and Felicitas, Felicitas explains that she feels the pain of parturition but when she is in the arena, “another will be in me who will endure for me because I will be enduring for him” (15.6). When a group of martyrs was being torn to shreds by shells, the author of the Martyrdom of Polycarp explains that they were able to endure the torture in silence because “The Lord was standing near, speaking with them” (2.2).
Early Christian martyr texts make the general point of Christian insensitivity to pain in a number of other ways, as well. Sometimes the pain that is supposed to be experienced by the Christian is, instead, experienced by the persecutor in a kind of divine “I’m rubber, you’re glue” kind of exchange. Sometimes authors make a point to show Christians experience pain that relates to worldly attachments (children, parents, etc.), but they are insensitive to the dissolution of the body relating to martyrdom. And sometimes, the texts utilize gallows humor to insist on Christian invulnerability to pain. So, after examining the texts closely, the answer to my question “Does martyrdom hurt?” is a confounding, but nonetheless clear, “no.”
Having laid out the data given in the martyr texts relating to painlessness, it still remains for me to offer an explanation for it. Early Christians knew well how the events of the amphitheater went. They would have been familiar with the judicial system, its goals, its tools, and its outcomes. Pretty much anyone who has a body can imagine what being burned, stabbed, hanged might feel like—at least in part. The audiences of these early texts were no different. So why would the authors of these stories make such outlandish claims about Christian bodies? My last post will offer some ways of understanding the logic of this choice.

But WHY Doesn’t Torture Hurt?? Guest Post by Stephanie Cobb

In my first two posts, I asked “Does martyrdom hurt?” and explored reasons why early Christian martyr texts might reasonably answer “yes!” but then detailed the ways in which these texts actually make the counterintuitive argument: “No! Martyrdom doesn’t hurt.” In this—my last—post on Divine Deliverance: Pain and Painlessness in Early Christian Martyr Texts, I want to explore a slightly different question: “Why doesn’t martyrdom hurt?”
To read a text and note the language it uses is the easy part of research. To explain why certain language is preferred by a particular author or across time and space—especially when it’s unexpected language—is not only the hard part of research, it’s also the part that makes it meaningful. In other words, not many people will care that martyr texts used language of analgesia and anesthesia; they may (I hope) care why. And so the rest of this post offers a few ways of contextualizing the claims I originally found so confounding.
  • Eschatological hopes. The discourse of painlessness would have been easily understood in terms of eschatological expectations. The martyr texts are apocalyptic texts in that they posit a dualistic worldview, anticipate the coming end of time, final judgment, and the eternal rewards of the faithful. But, at least for some of these authors, Christians enduring torture do not have to wait until the end of time to receive the benefits of their salvation. Rather, the texts suggest that the martyrs attain these rewards—at least in part—even before their deaths. That is, we may find in some of these narratives an assertion of a realized eschatology: for the martyrs, the benefits of future glory are translated into the present world.
Of particular import in this case are the beliefs about the resurrected and glorified body. The third century North African author, Tertullian, asserts that the resurrected flesh will be “impassible, inasmuch as it has been liberated by the Lord so that it is no longer possible for it to suffer” (Res. 57.13). The medieval historian Caroline Walker Bynum uses a beautiful phrase to explain this expectation: she suggests that a “sort of anesthesia of glory” might spill over from the “promised resurrection into the ravaged flesh of the arena” (The Resurrection of the Body in Western Christianity 200-1336, 45). Relevant to this promise is Revelation 21:4, which describes the New Jerusalem: in this glorified place, “death will be no more, morning and crying and distress/pain will be no more.” In the bodies of the martyrs, Satan has been defeated and through the martyrs’ impassibility, the kingdom of God has been realized.
  • Stoic discourses. Martyr texts—like so many other Christian texts in antiquity—draw on Stoic philosophy. Assertions of Christian disinterestedness in pain correspond with certain understandings of Stoic teachings. For Stoic philosophy, pain must be understood within the larger goal of living in accordance with nature. One must accept what one cannot change. The Stoic philosopher Epictetus, for instance, taught that we cannot change whether or not we are executed, but we can control how we react to execution: I can stop myself from groaning or crying out or wailing. Generally speaking, Stoics did not claim that the philosopher could overcome the sensation of pain altogether; rather, they argued for self-control in the face of pain. But there is evidence of certain misunderstandings of Stoic teachings on this exact point.
The Jewish Stoic author of 4 Maccabees is one case in point: he argues that “devout reason” masters the passions that stand in the way of manliness, namely: anger, fear, and pain (1.4). In relating the story of the elderly Jewish man Eleazar, the narrator explains that reason “masters external pain” (6.34). Similarly, a group of brothers who successfully resist the tyrant’s demands demonstrate that they were “complete masters of pain” (8.28). 4 Maccabees was known and used by early Christians, and so it would not be surprising for Christians, too, to associate reason with the ability to rise above the experience of bodily pain.
  • Judicial discourses. I mentioned in my last post that inflicting pain was central to the judicial system of the Roman empire. One way of understanding claims to Christian painlessness is to see it as a response to pagan claims to the efficacy of judicial torture. That is to say, both pagans and Christians used existing discourses to claim cultural capital for themselves and to deny that capital to their opponents.
Pagan authors cast Christians as stubborn members of politically threatening groups who, as such, were justly tortured and executed. These authors narrate the triumph of Roman power over lawless individuals who threaten the empire. Since, as we have already seen, judicial pain was inflicted publicly in order to serve as a deterrent to others, Christian rejection of the experience of pain was especially subversive. In their claims to Christian insensitivity to pain, the martyr texts upend the entire logic of the Roman judicial system: through these narratives, Christian audiences are taught that what appears to be happening is not what, in fact, happens. Christian martyr texts reject the premise that Rome can harm the bodies of the faithful.
By undermining the judicial theory of pain, the early Christian martyr texts destabilize the entire system that supports the social, political, and religious life of imperial Rome. The Roman persecutors are found to be wholly inept at achieving their two related goals: first, they cannot hurt the Christian body—no matter how much torture they apply—and second, their attempts to dissuade others from joining the Christian faith inevitably backfire. Far from being a deterrent, the martyr texts assert that public torture brings more people into the fold.
Even more important than what the texts teach us about the individual body, however, is the lesson this counter-discourse teaches about the social body. The martyr’s body is simultaneously individual and social: it illustrates the strengths and (potential) weaknesses of Christianity as a social phenomenon as much as it does those of any particular individual. As such the Christian body’s resistance to the power of Rome takes on even more meaning. If the persecution of Christianity had as its aim the destruction of the movement, the impenetrability of the individual body demonstrates the impenetrability of the social body. Rome can no more destroy Christianity as a whole than it can harm any one of its members.
Before ending my stint as guest blogger, I’d like to make one final point about the discourse of painlessness in early Christian martyr texts. I have come to believe that we misread these texts if we insist on their historicity or that they must have at least a veneer of historicity to them. In the contexts in which they were written—when Christians feared (rightly or not) that they might be caught up in Roman persecutions—these texts have much loftier aims than merely reciting the “facts” of a particular event. Rather, I now read these texts as nothing less than miracle stories. It is not the individual Christian martyr whose story is front and center. These narratives focus primarily on the work of God. In the moments when an individual would feel most alone, these authors insist that nothing could be further from the truth. Bodies that should be in pain are not because they have been divinely delivered from that experience. God is not absent when Christians are standing in the arena; God is there, suffering for them, protecting their bodies from the pain that inevitably results from physical torture. The Christian martyr texts are not interested in “real” bodies. They are telling the story of God’s interaction in and with his people. These texts teach us not to be deceived by what we see with our eyes. Rather, we must look with the eyes of faith to see that the Lord is standing by, strengthening the martyrs, comforting them, healing them, protecting them, and rewarding them. In the end, the martyr texts narrate the miracle of divine deliverance.

And even though you probably thought that I'd gone missing, I bet you the Surveillance State didn't. Nope. The all seeing eye knew exactly where I was. And not only me, it knows where you are. It knows where all of us are. And it probably knows us better than we know ourselves.
2010, August 28 • Google, CIA Invest in 'Future' of Web Monitoring. The investment arms of the CIA and Google are both backing a company that monitors the web in real time – and says it uses that information to predict the future. The company is called Recorded Future, and it scours tens of thousands of websites, blogs and Twitter accounts to find the relationships between people, organizations, actions and incidents – both present and still-to-come. In a white paper, the company says its temporal analytics engine "goes beyond search" by "looking at the 'invisible links' between documents that talk about the same, or related, entities and events." The idea is to figure out for each incident who was involved, where it happened and when it might go down. Recorded Future then plots that chatter, showing online "momentum" for any given event. "The cool thing is, you can actually predict the curve, in many cases," says company CEO Christopher Ahlberg, a former Swedish Army Ranger with a PhD in computer science. Source Here
That's so amazing isn’t it? You can actually predict the curve. Well now, let's think, were have we seen that curve terminology before? Population Curve? Nope, that's not right. Curve Your Enthusiasm? That doesn't sound right either. Right, it's Curb Your Enthusiasm. Duh. The Learning Curve? Ugh. I just can't remember, can you? Oh shoot, that's right, it's the Title of My Post's, Flatten the Curve. Ok. Moving on. Let's get back to Recorded Future.
Occupy Wall Street Media Monitoring • In 2011, Recorded Future reported, "... gaining online momentum for the Occupy Wall Street movement. When we look more carefully at influencers in this discussion using our Influencer Map, we find that Iran Press TV is the second largest influencer after the U.S. media!" Source Here
Recorded Future saw online momentum for the Occupy Wall Street Movement. But. But. Does that mean they knew the social discord was going to lead to today's riots? Could they be manipulating police to follow orders without fear of repercussions for the future? Nah. They couldn't have, otherwise police officers wouldn't be going to go jail after violating a citizens rights, right?
2020, June 22 • Police in America’s biggest cities are failing to meet even the most basic international human rights standards governing the use of lethal force, a new study from the University of Chicago has found. Researchers in the university’s law school put the lethal use-of-force policies of police in the 20 largest US cities under the microscope. They found not a single police department was operating under guidelines that are compliant with the minimum standards laid out under international human rights laws. Among the failings identified by the law scholars, some police forces violate the requirement that lethal force should only be wielded when facing an immediate threat and as a last resort. Some departments allow deadly responses in cases of “escaping suspects”, “fugitives”, or “prevention of crime” – all scenarios that would be deemed to fall well outside the boundaries set by international law. Top UN human rights expert urges US to listen to demands of protesters. In other cities, police guidelines failed to constrain officers to use only as much force as is proportionate to the threat confronting them. Source Here
Hmmm. Maybe the militarization of our police is starting to make a lot more sense now, doesn’t it? It makes you feel all warm and fuzzy to know that pretty soon that same police force will be able to track you anywhere.
May 15, 2012 • CIA Chief: We'll Spy on You Through Your Dishwasher. It's great that you've got so much new household hardware connected to the internet. Especially for the CIA, whose director wants to spy on you through it. More and more personal and household devices are connecting to the internet, from your television to your car navigation systems to your light switches. CIA Director David Petraeus cannot wait to spy on you through them. SOURCE HERE
What's David Petraeus talking about? The Internet of Things. That same Internet of Things that 5G is being rushed out for. That same Internet of Things that will help usher in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. That same 4th Revolution that the World Economic Forum is calling the Great Reset. Perfect Plan. Crisis. Crap your pants. Solution. If you think the Surveillance State is omnipresent now, just wait until the infrastructure is built for the next level of control. For our safety, of course. Keep Calm and Carry On. The Not Normal New Normal is going to be very dangerous. And to save us from the Not Normal New Normal they have to keep us safe from Fake News with Fact Checks. Wash Your Hands and Wear Your Mask. Keep your Contact Tracer App Up to Date. Don't gather in large groups, use the internet to keep in touch with friends and loved ones, that way we can data mine those conversations to keep you safe from conspiracy theorists antivax who propagate propoganda.
September 2, 2020 • Although the coronavirus pandemic has altered how people live for some time now, the knowledge that it will have an end is a faint light at the end of a long socially distanced tunnel. But, according to new research, that light may be further than we thought. Infectious disease expert and coronavirus task force voice of reason Anthony Fauci believes we may be entering a “pandemic era.” Because of course we are. Source Here
The Pandemic Era. Line up and get shot, errr, sorry, I meant, line up and get your shots. Don't be an antivaxer. Save Civilization, Get Your Vaccination. Remember, we won't have a second wave, it will just be one long continuous wave. Wait. Hold up. Nope. That's wrong. We are having a second wave. Surf's up so don't wipe out.
His assertion comes from a new report in the scientific journal Cell, whose author David Morens, a medical historian and colleague of Fauci’s at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, predicts that coronavirus might be only the first of a series of worldwide diseases. These types of diseases have been cropping up more and more frequently, according to research. The phenomenon is similar to the exponential growth of climate change, meaning if a “pandemic age,” becomes a reality, it joins humanity’s very real race to doomsday. Neat!
Ah. The Pandemic Era and Environmental Collapse. Amazing! It's the sequel that we've been waiting for! Mad Max and Pandemic Road. And who is causing the upcoming doom? Why us, who else. You see, the enemy isn't at the gates, that Trojan Horse was yesterday's news. The Terrorists that were threatening Western Civilization have been beaten back, only to be replaced by an enemy that can't be seen or heard. The Biological Terrorists. And how are we responsible for the Great Bioterror that needs a Great Reset?
As for the culprit to this acceleration? It’s us, of course. For how humans are causing this acceleration, Fauci and Morens point to deforestation, urban crowding, and wet markets for wild game, which have been wreaking havoc for a century and contribute to environmental degradation around the world.
Us. It's always us. We don't listen. We just Keep Calm and Carry On. But now we're going to have to listen. We won't have any choice, will we? The environment is collapsing. It's our fault. We own the companies. We package small items in big boxes because, marketing. We dump toxic chemical waste that poison people. We make cellphones that are outdated in one year. We're the one's lying about plastic being recycled. What? You actually thought you were doing your part and saving the environment?
2020, September, 21 • The industry's awareness that recycling wouldn't keep plastic out of landfills and the environment dates to the program's earliest days, [NPR] found. "There is serious doubt that [recycling plastic] can ever be made viable on an economic basis," one industry insider wrote in a 1974 speech. Yet the industry spent millions telling people to recycle, because, as one former top industry insider told NPR, selling recycling sold plastic, even if it wasn't true. Here's the basic problem: All used plastic can be turned into new things, but picking it up, sorting it out and melting it down is expensive. Plastic also degrades each time it is reused, meaning it can't be reused more than once or twice. On the other hand, new plastic is cheap. It's made from oil and gas, and it's almost always less expensive and of better quality to just start fresh. As it turns out, less than 10% of plastic has ever been recycled.

Ever.

Source Here
It's us.. We demand these things. What? Does that shock you? Of course that's why they make our goods disposable, the public demands it. It's not like marketing works and the demand is a manufactured need to increase their profits. Nope. It's us. Our existence is killing the planet. This wouldn't be happening if there weren't so many of us. Because this is obviously the first extinction level event that could be happening because of abrupt climate change.
2020, September, 25 • A New Mass Extinction Event Has Been Discovered, And It Triggered The Rise of Dinosaurs. Source Here
Oh. Six mass extinction events. But it's us isn't it? Just look around. Birds falling from the sky. Fish washing up on shore. Elephant's dying.

WAIT! HOLD UP!

Didn't I write about the Elephant's dying? Yep. Flatten the Curve. Part 30 And didn't I say that it was cyanobacteria because I saw a pond that looked like it was outgassing hydrogen sulfide gas in a video I linked to? Yes, yes I did. And guess what? The Greek was right.
More than 300 elephants in Botswana have been killed by toxin-producing cyanobacteria in waterholes, government wildlife officials said Monday. But that explanation doesn't satisfy some conservationists. The deaths, which took place over the course of three months, were first recorded in May and reported in early July. Their cause was initially a mystery; Botswana ordered laboratory tests to be carried out on carcass, soil and water samples as speculation grew over the deaths. Cyanobacteria are routinely found in water, but not all produce toxins. Scientists worry that climate change will trigger the bacteria to produce more toxins as water temperatures rise and conditions become more favorable for the bacteria to grow. Source Here
That doesn't satisfy some conservationists? Really? Worldwide reports of a rotten egg smell. Dogs dying when they jump into cyanobacteria filled waters. Rivers turning red. Nah. The New Normal is our New Normal, until AI turns it into our New New Normal.
Pax Technica • What is the internet of things? This pax will not be dominated by any one state, Howard argues, but by “a special kind of stability in global politics, revealing a pact between big technology firms and government”. The categories of democracy and dictatorship will fall. In their place, he claims, will be data-driven socio-technocracies, built on the intensive reporting of our behaviours, habits, tastes and beliefs, seamlessly transmitted by the devices we use, carry and interact with. We won’t need to express our political preferences and needs: our white goods and driverless cars will express them for us. Source Here By tracking us in intensive and intrusive ways – not only in our homes, but in our vehicles and bodies – data-driven devices can nudge, manipulate and mould our behaviours, habits and preferences, limit our autonomy, and bring quantification, segregation and discrimination to what is currently a political economy held together by social fuzziness.
They'll be able to shape and modify our behavior. And when you put Recorded Future and other companies into the mix, guess what happens? They'll shape and modify our behaviours before they become our behaviours, because they'll already know how we'll behave in the future. Kind of like the shaming of antivaxer behavior before they announce:
Annual COVID-19 Vaccine May Be Necessary. Source Here
Or priming us for AI to save the environment:
According to a recent survey by Intel and the research firm Concentrix, 74 percent of business-decision makers working in environmental sustainability agree artificial intelligence (AI) will help solve long-standing environmental challenges; 64 percent agree the Internet of Things (IoT) will help solve these challenges. As the field of AI develops, so will the potential to protect the environment. From the land and air to both drinking and ocean water, AI is shaping up to be the key that governments, organizations, and individuals can tap to work toward a cleaner planet. Source Here
Do you see where all this is going? The AI and IoT will be everywhere. It will save us from the Collapse, which really means, it will save us from ourselves. Do you see the convergence that's taking place? No? Let me remind you. Because if we are the problem, then we aren't alone.
Coronavirus which is killing and infecting people all over the world was created in a Lab in China's Wuhan, such an idea would have been labelled a conspiracy theory until a few weeks ago. But earlier this week, a Chinese virologist Dr Li-Meng Yan, in an exclusive conversation with WION claimed that the deadly coronavirus was developed in a government laboratory in Wuhan. She also said that Chinese government was aware of the COVID-19 spread. And now Professor Giuseppe Tritto, an internationally known expert in biotechnology and nanotechnology in his book 'China COVID 19: The chimera that changed the world' has said that he believes the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is behind the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19), leaving little doubt that this viral “chimera” was artificially created as a bioweapon. Source Here
Researchers claim long-term exposure to air pollution in China killed 30.8 million people between 2000 and 2016. Source Here
We're going to war against China, while they get the security apparatus up for AI in the war against our minds and individuality. For an environmental collapse they blame us for. And they will focus our shame into anger towards China.
The system will be set up. We will go to war with China. And the system will be fully executed by the time the war is done. It will have to be, for our safety, of course. And AI will keep us safe. Right? RIGHT! Wait. So then why are all the elite building Doomsday Bunkers? Almost like the 1% are covering their bases in case AI can't save us.
One of the most insidious things about gaslighting is the denial of reality. Being denied what you have seen. Being denied what you have experienced and know to be true. It can make you feel like you are crazy. But you are not crazy. Dr Robin Stern, associate director at Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and author of The Gaslight Effect says that usually “when people are abused there are signs that you can point to that are much more obvious. Someone who has been hit or threatened for instance – it’s easy to see and understand how they have been hurt. But when someone is manipulating you, you end up second-guessing yourself and turning your attention to yourself as the person to blame”. Source Here
DARVO - Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender. Or, Gaslighting. It's a popular term. It's a great way to make us feel like powerless victims. Gaslighting makes us feel like we need to be saved. When you're searching for answers but only end up finding confusion, it's setting you up to accept any New Normal answer they'll eventually give you. Need someone to blame for the state of chaos? Here's China. They're the problem. We're All In This Together, and You're Either With Us Or Against Us. And there will be people against the war, and therefore against us, so we'll need surveillance to protect us from the enemies within. Because another War will be a necessary evil. World War Three will be the War to save the planet by destroying the planet. Makes sense, doesn't it? And when our planet is worse off than before? Then we'll need the surveillance to help us decide when to have Climate and Pandemic lockdowns. The omnipresent Eye of AI will guide us and safeguard us against Fake News and Not Normal New Normal Narrative disrupting lies. We will have to kill what's left of our privacy because dangerous thoughts are born in secrecy.
We must become a transparent society, because the truth doesn't need to hide. The truth is universal. But who decides what is true? Not us. We can't be trusted. Look what we already did with our privacy, we destroyed our planet. So we have to become dependent upon the system and trust the choices that the system makes. We can't just follow system orders though, we have to become a part of the system, a unified whole working towards the common good of all mankind. But what happens when you question the choices? What happens if your thoughts and actions disrupt the Not Normal New Normal Narrative?
Let's check back with David Petraeus a year later after openly musing about how the IoT will make surveillance ubiquitous in our society.
2012, November 9 • Petraeus Resigns From CIA After Feds Uncover 'Extramarital Affair' Source Here David Petraeus, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, has resigned. Petraeus told CIA employees Friday in a letter that he was stepping down "for personal reasons... After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours."
2012, November 11 • How I Was Drawn Into the Cult of David Petraeus. The biggest irony surrounding CIA director David Petraeus’ downfall is becoming a casualty of the very publicity machine he cultivated to portray him as superhuman. I have some insight into how that machine worked. Source Here
2020, November 15 • Now the CIA Is Investigating Petraeus. Anyone who thought the scandal around CIA Director David Petraeus was winding down can think again. Now the CIA is investigating its former leader while some agency veterans whisper that they never liked him anyways. Source Here
Oops. I think David said something that he shouldn't have said about IoT and Surveillance. It's a quick fall from Superhero To Villan when you reveal the Superhero Clubhouse Secrets.
Look. Listen. Think. Question. All the time. The information is out there. So's the truth, even if it's camouflaged. Because the truth is, the big picture is a lot more complicated than thought reducing and behavioral shaping memes. Life isn't black and white. That's why they call it a Grey War. And the Grey War is happening all around us. And in the coming weeks I'll be posting some eye opening stories about the Dark Web, Blockchain, and the current narrative about inequality. About a certain pharmaceutical company and how it's DNA tests are failing the grade. We will dive into the Uighur Minority in China. And most importantly, Cicada 3301, and how it seems to be playing a larger role than most of us realize. And some updates on the current microbial imbalance that is starting to cause havoc on our planets environment. And as if that isn't enough for eye opening revelations, there is a disturbing trend that I've noticed regarding asteroids and impacts. Because why not, after all, 2020 isn't a real party until a Rockstar crashes the party.
I may have been too tired to post lately, but I wasn't too tired to read. Thanks again for all the comments and PM's checking in on me. It meant the world to me, even if I didn't have time to respond.
Heads up and eyes open. Talk soon.

2020.09.25 20:35 Rsubs33 [Game Preview] Week 3 - Cincinnati Bengals (0-2) at Philadelphia Eagles(0-2)

Cincinnati Bengals (0-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (0-2)
The Eagles are off to their worst start with a real coach since 2003 (I consider 2013-2015 non-existent) when they also dropped their first two games of the season. The team would like a repeat of that season where following a week 3 bye,the team rebounded to defeat the Bills 23-13. The Eagles ripped off 12 wins in their remaining 14 games following their 0-2 start. Maybe the Eagles will be able to do the same, but they will have to shake the injury bug first. The Eagles will be without first round pick Jalen Raegor this week who underwent surgery on his hand to repair a torn UC ligament in his thumb. The Eagles may also be without Fletcher Cox who is dealing with an oblique injury. The Cox injury should be watched closely if he can’t go, Joe Mixon and Joe Burrow will have a much easier day against the struggling defense. Last week against the Rams, the defense was under prepared and unable to stop anyone. The Rams took advantage of Jim Schwartz’s consistently odd decision to have his CBs, play so far off the line of scrimmage, giving a free release to the WRs and allowing easy short passes. If Schwartz does the same this week, it will be another long day for the Eagles defense and a great fantasy day for Tyler Boyd, who Bengals Joe Burrow connected with 7 times last week including 1 for a TD. On the other side of the ball Doug and Carson will both need to be better than the last two weeks. For Carson, he needs to get out of his own head and play with confidence. For Doug, he needs to find some creativity and help his 5th year QB. He would do well to get Carson moving and utilize the RBs more in the flat and screen game. However, if we see more of the same we saw in weeks 1 and 2 from the Eagles coaching staff, we should expect another loss. Hopefully that is not the case and Carson and the coaches can learn from their mistakes in weeks 1-2 and pull our a win this week. Go Birds!

Recap from Last Week’s Games.
Eagles - The Eagles' struggles continued in their home opener against the Los Angeles Rams. An early fumble by Miles Sanders led to a Rams touchdown by Tyler Higbee. After the Eagles cut their deficit to four with a Jake Elliott field goal, Los Angeles responded with a Robert Woods touchdown run followed by a second Higbee touchdown catch. Trailing 21-3, the Eagles closed the deficit to five points by halftime with touchdown runs by Wentz and Sanders. After forcing a three-and-out on the Rams' first possession of the second half, the Eagles would drive to the Los Angeles 21, only for Wentz's first down pass to be picked off by Darious Williams, turning the momentum back in the Rams' favor as they would outscore the Eagles 16-3 the rest of the way. Despite not being sacked once during the game, Wentz finished the day with a 56.5 passer rating, completing 26 of 43 passes for 242 yards and two interceptions. The 37-19 blowout loss dropped Philadelphia to 0-2 for the first time since the 2015 season, and marked the Eagles' first home opener loss since that same season. It was also the first home loss to the Rams franchise since the opener of the 2001 season.
Bengals - After losing their regular season-opening game at home, the Bengals then traveled to Cleveland to face the Browns for Battle of Ohio Round 1. In the first quarter, the Bengals scored first when Randy Bullock kicked a 38-yard field goal to make it 3-0. Though, the Browns took the lead when Nick Chubb ran for an 11-yard TD to make it 7-3. In the second quarter, the Browns went up by double digits when Baker Mayfield found O'dell Beckham Jr. on a 43-yard TD pass to make it 14-3. The Bengals then came within 4 after Joe Burrow found C.J. Uzomah on a 23-yard TD pass to make it 14-10. Mayfield then found Kareem Hunt on a 6-yard TD pass to put the Browns up by double digits, 21-10. The Bengals closed out the half when Randy Bullock kicked a 43-yard field goal to make it 21-13 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Browns went back up by double digits when Chubb ran for a 1-yard TD to make it 28-13. The Bengals drew closer with Bullock's 27-yard field goal to make it 28-16. In the fourth quarter, the Bengals were able to get within 5 when Burrow found Mike Thomas on a 4-yard TD pass to make the score 28-23. Though, the Browns would go back up by double digits yet again when Hunt punched the ball in for a 1-yard TD to make it 35-23. The Bengals wrapped up the scoring when Burrow found Tyler Boyd on a 9-yard TD pass to make the final score 35-30.

Stats to Know
QB Adjusted Completion %
What’s one thing rookie Joe Burrow and 5th-year Carson Wentz have in common? They have not been terribly accurate so far. PFF has an Adjusted Completion % stat that accounts for clear drops, spikes, throw aways, batted passes, and throws made while getting hit. Burrow and Wentz are near the bottom in AC%, with 70.4 and 70.3, respectively. Interesting to note a bit of the distribution within the array of aforementioned stats: while Burrow has had one of the lower rates of on-target passes dropped by the receiver (4.1%), Wentz doubled that at 8.4%, good for 5th-highest. Yes, Wentz has stunk, but...
Matchups to Watch
Rookie versus Veteran, Which QB Has Poise Down 0-2?
With two consecutive weeks of porous defense from both the Eagles and Bengals defensive units, this Sunday's matchup should rest squarely on the shoulders of each offensive unit. Will the Eagles be able to rely on fifth year starter Wentz? Will he be able to shake off two tumultuous weeks and put together a consistent offensive performance? Will the Bengals weapons coalesce around their rookie Burrow? Will he be able to put together his first complete NFL game and demonstrate that this season is the turning point for the franchise? A big piece of Wentz stabilizing his game time performance will be continuing his focus on short-time-to-throw plays. From Week 1 with 8 sacks versus the Washington Football Team to Week 2 and zero sacks versus the Rams with the vaunted Aaron Donald, the Eagles Offensive Line and Wentz’ pocket choices resulted in less lost yards and broken plays. Unfortunately, key turnovers again forced short-yardage scoring situations and massive tempo swings. Wentz needs to take advantage of the cleaner pocket that will likely be available versus the Bengals (2 sacks on the year so far) and finish drives cleanly to put the game away. Without rookie WR Jalen Reagor (placed on IR with a thumb injury after Week 2), Wentz will have to make use of the remainder of his threats, including veteran DeSean Jackson who had 6 catches on 9 targets for 64 yards against the superior Rams’ defensive backfield. Joe Burrow has had the classic introductory NFL QB experience. A high-flying game versus the Browns last week, with 300+ yards passing, 3TDs and zero ints was fantastic bounce back from Week 1 versus the Chargers. 193 yards, 0 TDs, and an int will not win the game for the Bengals versus the Eagles, even if Wentz struggles. A key focus for Burrow will be settling into the routine and relationships he’s formed with his offensive weapons. AJ Green remains one of the best WR threats in the NFL and his slow start to the season (8 catches for 80 yards) could end at any time, in any game with a QB like Burrow. Burrow threw a nearly record setting number of passes during the almost-come-from-behind loss versus the Browns; if the Bengals are able to establish their run-game and abuse the Philadelphia secondary in a similar way to the Rams offensive scheme, then Burrow could have a very big day. If he is forced to drop back 60+ times, and Joe Mixon is again held under 75 yards on the ground, the Bengals and Burrow may have a hard time. Keep an eye on how comfortable each QB is feeling, and whether they can establish good tempo. That will be key to offensive production this weekend.
Coaching Conundrum; Pederson versus Taylor
At the core of the NFL these days is the combat between offensive and defensive schemes. Both coaches come from a background of coaching QB play and offensive schemes, though from different eras and coaching trees. How they go about using that experience to enable their teams to a secure a necessary win this week will make or break their seasons. Doug Pederson, at the helm of a revamped offensive coaching tree with the addition of Quarterbacks Coach Press Taylor as Passing Game Coordinator, has had a rough three year stretch of offensive stumbles. Since the miraculous Super Bowl 52 season (2017), the Eagles have consistently failed to be productive, with a lot of the challenges relating to lack of roster depth and poor player improvement through misaligned coaching. This is the third consecutive year of stuttering offense to begin the season and a big piece of the matchup versus the Bengals will be how well the Eagles can settle in. Coach Pederson has made it clear that the lack of full-speed off-season practice plays a big role in the Eagle’s struggles so far; so it remains to be seen when and if both units can make use of this gametime practice to solidify the small flashes of prior success we’ve seen. Opposite Pederson is Coach Taylor, in his second year of a complete rebuild, now with the (ideally career-long) franchise WB in Burrow. Hailing from the Shanahan line, through the LA Rams McVay, Taylor was brought into Cincinnati to recreate the organization’s coaching structure and form a new core for the team around veteran WR AJ Green. The 2019 season showed marked improvement throughout, particularly in run production and passer protection; the addition of Covid-related practice limitations have also taken their toll on the Bengals’ preparations for this season, as exemplified by the Week 1 drubbing by the Ravens. Taylor returns this season with second-year offensive coordinator Brian Callahan, formerly the QB coach for the Raiders. The cerebral talent in the Bengals organization is clearly arrayed around giving Burrow the best possible chance to shine; and they may just do so against an extremely poorly performing Eagles defense. Being able to establish consistent offensive strength and consistency throughout this season will be a key part of whether this new coaching structure is able to flourish in Cincinnati or if yet more change is needed to remake the franchise. During game day, keep an eye out on how these coaches make use of their star players, now that the very early season yips and stumbles should be behind them. Whoever can appropriately adjust to the flow of the game and take advantage of the others mistakes will win this football game.
The Big Punt: How Special Teams Makes An Impact
Kevin versus Cameron, Huber versus Johnston, two players that may very well decide the nature of this Bengals versus Eagles matchup. These titans of the turf, two punters to rule them all, and two punters to pin them deep; two punters waiting on call, and two punters to make fans weep. In lieu of offensive production, and in hopes of good defensive play, Kevin Huber and Cameron Johnston bring their punting prowess to Lincoln Financial Field this Sunday. Hailing from opposite sides of the Earth, Huber from Cincinnati itself, and Johnston from Geelong Australia, these two are some of the most capable foot-based deliverers of the football to opposing teams. Huber holds nearly all of the Bengals franchise records in punting statistics; and Johnston holds the highest gross and net punting averages in a single Eagles season. The third year Australian punter is known by Eagles fans for his insanely long hang-time and penchant for pinning the NY Giants inside the 20 (20+ times in four games). Huber is loved by the Bengals fanbase as both their longest tenured player and his consistency over the past 13 years. He has missed just 2 of 180 possible games, and has been perennially top 10 at his position. Both players are in the final year of their contracts, so effective performance is a must for maximum salary gains. Keep an eye out on how effective these two are in establishing and keeping good field position. If both teams are struggling for consistency, these swings may be the key to a late drive that puts the game away. Additionally, with every punt comes the magic of a muffed punt return. If you’re a particular connoisseur of special teams play, watch and see if these punters add any special spin or location to their strikes; and key turnover last week in this position kept the Eagles hopeful. Maybe lightning will strike twice for the Eagles Special Teams and the Wizard with the Large Leg, Cam Johnston; maybe the Bengals gunners will scoop up a muff and Huber will be huger than expected. Stay tuned!

2020.09.25 13:39 Worm2120 DIA conspiracy made top page of this sub finally!!! Now seems like the perfect time to maybe share new things, but more importantly ask for help in connecting MAJOR dots. They aren't THAT smart, we can solve this.

Hmm...
I'm so happy to see people are looking at Denver Airport again, however we were never looking close enough. I've been interested in DIA for quite a long time now and within the last year had the chance of visiting, and can't help but wonder why no one has ever found anything?
When you reach this point as a Conspiracy Hypothesizer (I didn't stutter), you have to realize that answer is still there, you just have to see the issue in a way many others aren't.
Now, to brush up on the basics of DIA:
At 33,531 acres (52.4 sq mi; 135.7 km2),[3] it is the largest airport in North America by land area and the second largest in the world, behind King Fahd International Airport.[4] Runway 1634L, with a length of 16,000 feet (3.03 mi; 4.88 km), is the longest public use runway in North America and the seventh longest in the world.
For reference; Manhattan stands at 22.82 mi^2, meaning you could fit Manhattan TWICE in DIA's property.
The runways totally DO look like Swastikas. You can't even deny it.
-Not to mention they openly admit, but never DISPROVE any conspiracies surrounding the airport. The effect has been... well no one thinks DIA is up to anything really anymore from workers claiming they've never seen anything to gargoyles literally mocking you for thinking they are up to something, they did a great job considering I still smell shit in the air and it isn't me. Yet the rest of the population seems to have forgotten some VERY important history.
Now onto some deeper thoughts:
The infamous "New world airport commission" stone.
The biggest thing anyone has pulled from this was that infamous, yet non-existent group that is first listed under "Contributors". While I agree this is strange, there is so much more to this stone guys.
Numerology:
March (3) 19, 1994.
1+9+1+9+9+4 = 33
Time Capsule to be opened in 2094 "for the people of Colorado"
20 + 9 + 4 = 33
-This date surrounding 1994 CANNOT BE COINCIDENTAL. I will prove it... keep reading.
Important person:
-Wellington E. Webb.
If you google that name with "Freemason", you'll find his PERSONAL WEBSITE. Where it strictly lists he is a 33rd degree mason, yet you cannot find that info anywhere else. This man is very mysterious to me and I'd love if someone can help me dig on all of this info. ANYWAY:
Wellington Webb's 1991 bid for mayor included his "Sneaker Campaign", in which he walked door to door through a large portion of Denver, introducing himself as a relatively unknown candidate.
Unknown candidate.
Webb served as mayor of Denver for 12 years, from 1991 to 2003. One highlight of his years in office was the South Platte River Corridor Project, involving commercial and residential redevelopment, as well as reclamation of park land, along the South Platte River in central Denver. He was also mayor at the time of the completion of Denver International Airport, started by his predecessor, Federico Peña.
Finished DIA, and is a 33rd degree Freemason. His name is on the stone, so this isn't hard to believe, I mean like he John Hancocked the thing lmao. Also in 1994:
In 1994, officials ordered a $62 million backup baggage system built to speed the airport's opening and to fill in until the kinks could be worked out of the main system.
So, Wellington Webb took over as mayor in 91', delayed DIA's opening 4 times and went so far over budget for an airport its unreal. The airport opened in 95', making 1994, the year the stone was also laid, the last year DIA would be closed and anything not hidden could be hidden.
Why am I so focused on 1994 and the stone?
-I was dumbfounded once I REALLY looked at the stone closer. Why is everyone so tied up on "The New World Airport Commission" if it doesn't exist on paper? Perhaps the members are listed on the stone I thought...
Martin Marietta Aeronautics.
That is the second name listed, right below the new world airport commission. Who is this company and why has no one ever heard of it you're wondering? Because in 1995, The Martin Marietta Corporation merged with the Lockheed Corporation to form what we now know today as: Lockheed Martin. This would make 1994 the last year that "Martin Marietta Aeronautics" would even exist, thus placing the stone in this year would never raise suspicion of conspiracy to anyone in the future, because Lockheed Martin is the most advanced technological companies in the entire world. Especially regarding military equipment. Just read up on some patents that Lockheed Martin holds to understand the true gravity of what this means.
Martin Marietta Corporation + Lockheed Corporation = Lockheed Martin = largest military arms supplier in the entire world, arguably holding the most advanced tech of our race = The New World Airport Commission? Why else would Martin Marietta hold any relevance to DIA whatsoever?
Fentress Bradburn Architects is also listed, though I couldn't find anything relevant but a quote:
I don't begin with a preconceived notion of what a building should be – it is not a sculpture. I prefer to patiently search through extensive discovery until I find a seam somewhere, crack it open and discover the art inside.[27]
from their Wikipedia page. The stone also lists:
Benjamin H. Bell Jr. and Claude w. Gray Sr. Both are very high ranking Freemasons, you've never heard of them before and cannot find ANYTHING online about these people EXCEPT for Freemason websites. VERY strange and I really need help finding out more, these people are smart but they are naive in thinking they can't be caught, the answer is here somewhere.
Now, this is gonna get me some hate I bet but I need to mention it: Wellington E. Webb, Benjamin H. Bell Jr, and Claude W. Gray Sr, are ALL 33rd degree African Americans. I don't know what this means or why, but I just know... it means something. Especially considering His recent political views from this 2020 interview. Notice him cheering on the violence of BLM protests:
Webb: I am so proud of these kids protesting that I boil over with pride. It’s also good to continue to see the old-timers who have been protesting police brutality and social justice issues for decades.
Hmmm...
Strange markings on the floors:
Dzit Dit Gaii - "White Mountain" - Blanca peak, Colorado. If you're paying close attention... you'll notice the ranking for this mountain for North American highest mountain peaks is ranked... 33rd. Why would this be put in a strange language in the middle of the airport? HMMMMMMMMMMMMM. No coincidences.
Anywho, I know DIA has just loads of shit out of the ordinary and spending multiple hundreds of millions of dollars for a "Luggage system" that failed is just not true. If you've worked there, I can assure you, you have not seen all 53sq Miles of that location and you never will. They could MILES underground for all we know and from the tech they can have. Anyway Im really tired so thats all I got for now lol, please help me expand on this info WE CAN SOLVE THIS MYSTERY PEOPLE WE JUST GOTTA THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX!!!
EDIT: Just wanted to add that 54.2sq miles is also 33,531 acres... gotttaaaa love the 33rd.
EDIT2: just wanted to state that on a map, its eerie that DIA is practically the start of Denver.
Also, I took my own picture of Bluecifier when I flew in to DIA... ill never forget that horse man. https://imgur.com/a/7GYkLlL

2020.09.25 13:17 House_of_Suns /r/QOTSA Official Band of the Week 21: ALL THEM WITCHES

Let me ask you a question. If you haven’t listened to Kyuss, are you even a QotSA fan?
I suppose it is possible. Some people can be Peter Gabriel fans without being Genesis fans, or Ozzy Osbourne fans without being Black Sabbath fans, or Audioslave fans without being fans of Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine. And I am pretty sure that there are Foo Fighters fans out there who are not fans of Nirvana -- probably because Foo Fighters are a way better band than Nirvana.
Yeah, I said it. Come at me.
But QotSA without Kyuss? I can’t see it. Maybe I am biased because I just love the low desert sound. Heavy riffs, lots of fuzz ,and earthquake-inducing bass are my jam. That’s why I love Self-Titled so much and why I feel 18 A.D. is chronically underappreciated as a song, and it is an absolute crime that they don’t play it live.
I know I am not alone in this. Kyuss were a genre defining band that created what we now call Stoner Rock. Bands like Valley of the Sun, King Buffalo, Truckfighters, Stonerror, Sleep, Clutch, Mother Engine, Mondo Generator, Duel, and Fu Manchu all continue to write and perform Stoner Rock today. If you haven’t taken a dive into this scene, I totally envy the fact that you get to experience this music for the first time.
Today we are going to check out a great Stoner Rock band that just dropped a new album a few weeks ago. They have more fuzz than a five day backwoods fishing trip. They have bigger jams than Smucker’s, Welch’s, and Kraft combined. They will make your one-hitter hit a home run. You are gonna want to roll down the windows of your low riding caddy and drive all night through the desert.
Yep, you are in for a treat. This week’s band is ALL THEM WITCHES.
About Them
You are familiar with the Hero’s journey, right? That is the literary trope where our protagonists leave their comfortable little world, are mentored through a series of increasing challenges, find themselves at a low point, overcome obstacles, and return home greater and wiser than before?
As with every story of heroes, our group of adventurers from Nashville Tennessee went on a truly epic journey. Drummer Robby Staebler had just arrived in Nashville from Portland, Oregon and was looking for some buds to start a band. He had rolled up at his new home in the back of a moving van, because his mom had decided that he was just not good enough to ride up front. His dad was conspicuously absent. After meeting a sketchy male role model with a Smashmouth-esque chinstrap beard, he was forced by this would-be academic to enslave a small animal. He then ran away from home to engage in a series of escalating gladiatorial fights for money.
Wait. Shit. That is the plot of Pokemon Emerald, not the story of All Them Witches. Damn free emulators. Such a massive time sink.
Mudkip for the win. You are damn right I’m bringing back that meme.
Where was I? I kinda got distracted there. Oh yeah. Robby Staebler was looking for a band. He met guitarist Ben McLeod in a bar (remember when we could meet people in bars?) and then met aspiring drama student Charles Michael Parks Jr. when he took a job at “a corporate hippie store”. Parks Jr. turned those theatre aspirations into being a great frontman and bass player. The band rounded out their membership with Allan Van Cleave, a friend of Staebler, on keys. All Them Witches took the inspiration for their name from the set-prop book entitled All of Them Witches in the 1968 Roman Polanski Spawn-of-Satan movie Rosemary’s Baby.
Let’s get something else out of the way: Yes, I said Nashville Tennesee. The Buckle of the Bible Belt. The Protestant Vatican. The Athens of the South. The Hot Chicken Capital. Yes, the self-proclaimed Music City is perennially associated with Country music, Gospel music and, to a lesser extent, contemporary Christian Rock. There is a Jazz scene. There are active Barbershop groups. The city is the home of the Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Hee Haw was shot there. It is a city that, until a few decades ago, still had strong ties to the Confederacy.
How the hell did a Stoner Rock band start there?
Quickly, that’s how.
The band were officially formed in February of 2012 (remember when that year was supposed to be the end of the world? C’mon, Mayans, if you really meant 2020 why didn’t you just say 2020?) and released their first album, Our Mother Electricity, on December 6th, 2012. Being from Nashville, the album was of course released on the German heavy psych label Elektrohasch Schallplatten. So just so we’re clear: Stoner Rock was born in the California Desert and then adopted by a band from Tennessee and released on a German label. I just have one question: Where the fuck is Carmen Sandiego?
To be fair, All Them Witches characterized their debut sound as being ‘psychedelta rock’...which kinda sounds like a knock off version of an X-Man. The album is full of heavy jams. Listeners can expect to hear the influence of the blues mixed with deep fuzz and highly compressed vocals. Until it Unwinds is over eight minutes of rolling swagger that will have you thinking about 50 Million Year Trip. Heavy/Like a Witch has some definite Stone Temple Pilots vibes and is a great opener. The true standout on the album is The Urn, a dark and twisted fable that is really the antithesis of everything one associates with music in the Bible Belt. The album was a declaration of war on everything cheery and pleasant to be found in the Music City, and a bold statement from a band finding its feet.
The band were not entirely happy with the production on Our Mother Electricity. In order to assert themselves, they went ultra low-tech. The released the Extra Pleasant EP in July of 2013. It was recorded on a 4-track cassette tape using only two microphones. Production-wise, it is a step back - but when you listen to it on headphones, you can appreciate the raw talent. It is a weird low-fi follow up and almost like listening to a debut rather than the first album. Listening to this EP is like hearing a Pink Floyd cover band’s first original songs that have been mashed up with Clutch and recorded on an iPhone 4. Even with those limitations, tracks like Sludger will stay with you and are worth your time.
While their first two releases had some modest success, All Them Witches really did not get widespread acclaim until the release of their second full album, Lightning at the Door, in late 2013. Every band that has ever released anything on Bandcamp wants to experience the kind of underground word-of-mouth sensation that this album generated. The album is part-concept, part-thematic and has narrative threads that tie it together (e.g. the two tracks The Marriage of Coyote Woman and The Death of Coyote Woman - clearly, not a happy ending for the titular character). If you loved Songs for the Deaf and Rated R, then this is the album that you are going to want to start with as an introduction to the band. It has some amazing tracks - Funeral for a Great Drunken Bird and When God Comes Back are great on their own - but it is best experienced as a complete album. Do yourself a favor: Find a great set of headphones and listen to it front to back. You’ll thank me.
How do you follow up a concept album that gives you unforeseen popularity and access to a broader audience? Do you, say, create a dark follow-up to it, and find the title for that album in a lyric from a hidden track?
Who the fuck would make a weird choice like that?
All Them Witches took a different route and decided to instead channel their inner Beck. The Effervescent EP came out in June of 2014. There are only two songs, each clocking in at about 25 minutes long. Side A is Effervescent and Side B is Tnecsevreffe. The EP is a Rorschach blot of instrumental music in multiple movements that channels incredible musicality and allows you to superimpose your own meaning on it. It is like listening to Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin have a baby, if that baby was raised listening to coyotes howl and instrumental Kyuss tracks all mashed together on one continuous loop. Fans of the German band Mother Engine will hear definite parallels. The weird thing about Effervescent is its length: it is hard to think of it as an EP, because it is 50 minutes of music. But it has only two tracks, so it can’t really be an album...can it?
Yes, before you start in on me, I know about Sleep’s Dopesmoker. That 2003 one-song album may also have influenced our boys from the Hee Haw city.
So after playing around with longer and more intricate multiple-movement songs, it is no surprise that All Them Witches dropped a 57 minute ‘EP’ in 2015. A Sweet Release hit the airwaves on April 20. Yep, 4/20. No, that was not a coincidence. No, I’m not going to explain that to you. If you gotta ask, you’ll never know. Yes, if anyone doubted at all that this band was a Stoner Rock band, fuck all y’all, the release date is proof. Tracks on the EP range in length from almost 2 and a half minutes to over 24 minutes. It is a spacey, laid-back jam that is at times hypnotic and far-reaching, and equally urgent and immersive.
I’m not saying that you need to be high to appreciate this EP. I’m just saying that listening to Interstate Bleach Party and Howdy Hoodee Slank in the right…mood ...can make you see the color Octarine.
Lightning at the Door and Effervescent cemented All Them Witches as true underground masters of Stoner Rock. 2015’s Dying Surfer Meets His Maker saw them broaden their musical scope and refine their sound. The album (yes, it is an album this time) leans heavily into the Blues with layers of grunge and psychedelia and celtic strings and even harmonicas. (Side note: the last time I heard harmonicas used in Stoner Rock was never. So good on them. I will say this: the hook brings you back.) All these influences were mixed in one big bowl and smoked out the top of a giant bong for full effect. It is at the same time a more technical and more mellow album. Stand out tracks on the album are the hard hitting Dirt Preachers and El Centro and This is Where it Falls Apart.
All Them Witches found themselves touring the small club circuit and then playing bigger and bigger stages. They got invited to festivals like Bonnaroo and were greeted by enthusiastic fans (and clouds of fragrant haze). There is nothing like performing live to hone a band’s edge. By the time Sleeping Through the War dropped in 2017, the boys had been together, touring and recording, for five years. The album is tightly crafted by a tight band. There are even guest vocalists to add texture and harmony to the songs. Less mellow than its predecessor, the album roars right from the opening track - Bulls - through to the closing track, Guess I’ll Go Live On The Internet. 3-5-7 is probably one of the best Stoner Rock tracks you will come across. And when you recognize the tonal mirroring of Am I Going Up with Alabaster, you feel smarter than you actually are. Lots of albums have made me bang my head; very few have made me stop and recognize the musical structure that underpins the melody. That is Tool-level composition right there. Long story short: this is an album put out by a band in its prime and it does not disappoint.
If you remember what happened in English class, what follows the apotheosis for the main character is the falling action or denouement. All Them Witches had peaked with Sleeping Through the War and had nowhere to go but down. The 2018 Lost and Found EP was four (comparatively) short covers and remixes that seemed more like leftovers than an actual meal. Sure, leftovers can be tasty, but All Them Witches fans were used to getting new and better breakfasts, luncheons and dinners and instead got last Tuesday’s reheated bean burrito. Which is fine, if you dig burritos, but it is still not as good as a nice, juicy steak.
Goddam, is anyone else craving a meal? Why is it so smoky in here, and why do I want to eat burritos and Doritos?
Hehe. Dorito. Burrito.
Fuck. I need to focus. Moving on.
Any fan of the band could tell that something was up, and that Lost and Found was at best a B-Side. It soon became evident that something really was up. Keyboardist (and part-time violinist) Allan Van Cleave was out of the band. This left a gigantic Ray Manzarek-esque hole in the band’s sound. The breakup was not a good one, and left some scars.
Van Cleave was replaced by Jonathan Draper, and the band released the album ATW in Sept of 2018. Sonically, the album is sound, but seems to lack the spark of greatness that was in everything prior to Lost and Found. The technical skills are there - Draper knows his way around a keyboard, and that is clearly evident on Fishbelly 86 Onions - but it kinda (IMHO) sounds more like an amazing All Them Witches cover album than an actual effort by the band. It is kinda like Bryan Cranston dressing up in a Walter White mask. It is super close to previous efforts but just not the same, somehow. 1st vs. 2nd is a jam and so is Diamond, and the album has an unrelenting energy, but it is just a bit off the mark.
The band must have felt something similar. Draper was turfed from the group just a month after ATW dropped. Instead of trying to recreate the four member sound that had anchored them since John Cusak and Amanda Peet’s landmark film, they decided to choose a new direction entirely.
When bands shuffle their lineup, it tends to be adding members (like our very own ancient monarchs) or replacing members. Very few bands successfully delete members. Well, OK, that band from Liverpool did successfully delete Stuart Sutcliffe from its lineup and they went on to do alright. Genesis made a successful transition from a 4-piece to a 3-piece when Peter Gabriel left. Oasis got 100% better when Liam Gallagher and his ego both quit. But losing an integral part of your sound - and the keyboards were central in so many songs - would be a tough transition. The band’s fanbase-not-so secretly worried that the lack of keyboardist would spell the end. Thankfully, we were wrong.
All Them Witches took that leap. Digging into their nomenclature and lore, they released a single as a three-piece band on Halloween of 2019. 1X1 is an angry, powerful Stoner Rock jam with a video that is an homage to Jesus Christ Pose. It is a Kyuss-meets-Tool-meets-Led Zeppelin-at-a-Black-Sabbath-concert song that made everyone simultaneously applaud and exhale.
They were back.
The new LP Nothing as the Ideal just dropped on September 4th, 2020. It is a leaner, meaner iteration of the band that seems to have lost no momentum. Everything resonates with power. Saturnine and Iron Jaw evokes Tony Iommi riffage. The Children of Coyote Women is a direct callback to the album Lightning at the Door. 41 is a thumping tune and Enemy of my Enemy is a relentless sonic attack. But most importantly, we get to see All Them Witches evolve as a band but hang on to the core of their sound.
You’re never going to hear this band on your local top 40 radio station. You might catch them on College radio, if the DJ is cool enough. Like most great music nowadays, you have to go looking to find it. But when you do find it, what an amazing experience it can be.
So now you have completed your Hero’s Journey (Twist! It turns out that YOU were the hero all along!) According to the trope, you are now older and wiser because you have ventured out of your comfortable little world.
Now prove me right, hero. Go listen and awaken your inner stoner. And bring me some goddamn Doritos. Cool Ranch for the win.

Josh has included All Them Witches on The Alligator Hour and is known to be a fan of the band.
A recent review of Nothing as the Ideal stated that Charles Michael Parks Jr.’s voice was “Fantastic...like a bassier Josh Homme”.
More importantly, All Them Witches are a Stoner Rock band...and Josh literally invented the genre. It is clear that while the band has grown and evolved and are taking themselves to new places, their music has been inspired by that downtuned, low desert Kyuss groove.

2020.09.24 18:40 wolfboy180 A Kemetic calendar proposal

A few of us have probably felt guilty, or at least very strange, when writing down the date for Kemetic purposes - keeping a journal for our spiritual practices, or writing a letter to a temple, etc. I know I have, which is one of the reasons I’m proposing this. We could and do get by without one, but I’d like to leave this here in the hopes that it gains some traction. In any case, the rest of this post is a set of instructions on how to find the date for any given christian-calendar input.
Step 1: Determine Wep Ronpet.
Wep Ronpet is the Kemetic New Year, and its date is determined by the heliacal rising of Sirius (i.e. the first day of the year that you can see Sirius rising in the sky).
https://in-the-sky.org/ephemeris.php
You can use the site above to figure out the date of Wep Ronpet by punching in Cairo as the location, setting the Object Type to “any” and the Object to Sirius. (Just type it in, it’ll work.)
There’s a column on the right (you might need to scroll if you’re on your phone) titled “Observable (hover mouse)”. The first day after it stops saying “Not observable” is Wep Ronpet.
A quick table for upcoming years:
2020 / Aug 7 // 2021 / Aug 8 // 2022 / Aug 8 // 2023 / Aug 8 // 2024 / Aug 7 // 2025 / Aug 8 // 2026 / Aug 8
Its average date will drift forward to August 9th and 10th in the 30s and 40s, respectively.
Some people prefer to celebrate Wep Ronpet based on their own location - KO calculates it for the Tawy temple in Illinois. In order to standardize what the date is for anyone around the world, though, it’s calculated for Memphis, which is Cairo today.
Step 2: Determine the Month and Day.
There were 12 months in the ancient Kemetic calendar, each with 30 days, leaving a 5-day celebration at the end, before the next Wep Ronpet.
The months are as such:
1 Tḫy — Thoth (The first day of which is Wep Ronpet)
2 Mnht — Menhet
3 Ḥwt-ḥwr — Khut-khur
4 K3-ḥr-Ka — Ka-kher-Ka
5 Sf-Bdt — Sef-Bedit
6 Rḫ Wr — Ruj Wer
7 Rḫ Nds — Ruj Nedas
8 Rnwt — Rennut
9 Ḫnsw — Khonsu
10 Hnt-htj — Henet-heti
11 Ipt-hmt — Ipit-hemet
12 Mswt R3 — Mesut Ra (The number of days in this month can change depending on when this year’s Wep Ronpet is compared to last year’s. Add or subtract one when necessary, i.e. when the date for Wep Ronpet changes.)
Hryw Rnpt — Heryu Ronpet - 5 days.
Keep adding 30 days to your Wep Ronpet date until you are within 30 days of the target date. The number of times you added 30 (plus one) is the number of the month you’re in, with the exception of the Hryw Rnpt.
The remainder of days left is the date within the month.
Step 3: Determine the Year.
Ancient Kemetics used regnal years to determine the date — 2 Horemheb would be the 2nd year that Horemheb was Pharaoh. There is no longer a Pharaoh recognized by all Kemetics, so there is no longer a way to track the years using a regnal year system. As such, a standard counting-year system would be put in place, with the central event being the Hasbat Sema Ta, or the Joining of the Lands (of Egypt), which happened in ~3150 BC. The calendar is thus designated Ronpet Hasbat Sema Ta, or RHST. Years before 0 RHST are denoted as negative.
To find the year, add 3150 to the current year if it is between Jan 1 and Wep Ronpet; add 3151 to the current year if it’s Wep Ronpet, or between Wep Ronpet and Dec 31.
EXAMPLE:
Target date: September 24, 2020
Wep Ronpet 2020: August 7th

Aug 7 + 30 = September 6th
Added 30 (1x)

1x (+1) = 2: 2nd Month — Mnht
24 - 6 = 18
→ 18 Mnht

Sep 23 is after Aug 7 in the year
2020 + 3151 = 5171

→ 18 Mnht 5171 RHST
